I grew up on a small farm in Iowa. An early summer saying was that corn should be “knee-high by the fourth of July.” I’m pleased to report that my outdoor Lamb’s Breath seed crop was over waste high by Summer Solstice!
After three successful indoor seed crops, where I have continued to select and improve my Legend and Respect lines, I was able to rent a small plot of land on a nearby certified organic farm. I now have my first outdoor grow in 5 years!
The seeds were popped on April 16, using my handy CannaKan seed germination system. Seedlings were transplanted outdoors on May 10, into a re-purposed dog kennel enclosure, which is kept locked.
I amended the farm’s sandy, river bottom soil with Coast of Maine compost, worm castings, and Hemp Plus fertilizer from North Country Organics. When I transplanted the seedlings, I watered them with Fertrell Stress-X and fish emulsion. The plants are looking great!
At 9 weeks from seed pop and 6 weeks from being transplanted, the 3-foot tall plants are dark green, vibrant and bushy, with no signs of pest or disease issues. They also emit a lovely odor when brushed or rubbed!
I have done some training and fan leaf removal, and will soon begin thinning out the males, selecting the best for breeding. (Finding the right male will be a topic of a future blog – stay tuned.)
Until then, Happy Growing!
